Discovery in 2008 of the target for human monoclonal antibodies highly conserved among one group of yearly returning and some pandemic influenza viruses (Throsby, PLOS One, 2008). This target was subsequently defined by co-crystallography of the antibody- antigen complex (Ekiert, Science, 2009). Antibodies binding this conserved target on the influenza virus protected against the disease when given before infection as well as after (Koudstaal, J Infect Dis,2009; Friesen, PloS One 2010). First in man studies will be initiated with the lead candidate antibody in 2011.
