Discovery of the Papovavirus BK in 1981 (strain designated DIk as a pun on a previous isolate Dun, meaning Fat for DIK and Thin for Dun) in urine of a child with acute tonsillitis (1981, BMJ). Based on previous data of Van der Noordaa and Wertheim-van Dillen (1977, BMJ) the suggestion was made in a follow-up publication in 1982 that BK virus may cause a respiratory infection in children. In 1994 researchers from Norway indicated that despite the finding of BKV DNA on rare occasions in nasopharyngeal aspirates the gastro-intestinal tract is the port of entry
for BK virus (J Clin Microbiol, 1994).
